I picked the Late '80s. I think Pop hit it's prime there. If you asked about New Wave then the early '80s ('80-'83) would've been my choice.

    I agree with whistledog. I love the music from the early 80's, especially '81, '82 & '83

Mid! The best thing about the late 80s is the Freestyle genre!

I voted for mid 80's, but late 80's were great too. Early 80's seemed to be just a overlap from the 70's. Often happens at the start of a new decade. Thats why the early 90's were pretty good!

This was a tough poll, but I threw my vote in for the mid-80's.

I chose early eighties, because the majority of stuff I thought was good was from '81 through '85, so that encompassed all but two years.

I went with the mid 80's too. Got to admit though, the early 80's were grittier and more punkish and who could forget Belinda Carlisles late 80's stuff?

Cool Re: What Was The Best Part Of The Decade For 80's Pop Music?

I voted for the mid 80's because 1985 is my favourite year for 80's music. However i love the whole synth pop era too. I believe this also encompasses the period that i voted for as the music was still quite keyboard orientated.

The Mid 80's is when we saw transitions and great videos being made!!!

Nothing beats a song recorded in between 84 and 86!!

I do really think that mid 80's were the best of all times, I sometimes feel that I got stuck by that years

Re: What Was The Best Part Of The Decade For 80's Pop Music?

It was really MTV that made the difference. 1980 and 1981 still had lots of lame country-pop and few new wave songs with lots of aging '60s and early '70s stars still being prevalant, and is sort of that "overnight zone" between disco and the new wave/synthpop explosion. 1982 is getting better, but not quite there. 1983-85 were unquestionably the best years for pop of the 80s; MTV was at its creative peak. But in 1986, the stuff became a bit too forumlatic and the music tended to get more overproduced and glossy, with sappier ballads; plus new wave pretty much faded that year as well, with veteran artists just merging with pop styles (Human League's Human, Duran Duran's Nortorious for example). 1987 screams FORMULA among established pop stars (Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Whitney Houston, and others simply just recycled ideas of the successes of their last albums and resulted in lots of "made for radio" hits, though Freestyle and Hair Bands were bright spots of '87. 1988 tended to have bland, cheesy ballads and forgettable melodies. I actually like 1989 better than 1986-88 as some songs that year showed some direction toward what the '90s would sound like plus there was one final flush of power ballads as well. If I ranked the years, it would be like this:

    1. 1984
    2. 1983
    3. 1985
    4. 1982
    5. 1987
    6. 1989
    7. 1981
    8. 1986
    9. 1980
    10. 1988

I'm a big Roxette fan, so I have to go with late eighties.
