Thumbs up 80's Videos On DVD

Well, I bought my very first regional free DVD player the other day, and while I was at it - a few regional code 2 (German) DVDs with 80s music videos!

Ok, the first DVD is called "Pop & Wave: Clip Mix No. 1"

    Including these videos:

    1. Nik Kershaw - Wouldn't It Be Good
    2. Tears For Fears - Mad World
    3. Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams
    4. Visage - Fade To Grey
    5. Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me Round
    6. Adam And The Ants - Stand And Deliver
    7. Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen
    8. King - Love And Pride
    9. Wham! - Young Guns
    10. ABC - The Look Of Love
    11. Thompson Twins - Hold Me Now* (Widescreen)
    12. Animotion - I Engineer
    13. Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax
    14. Flash & The Pan - Midnight Man
    15. Bros - When Will I Be Famous?
    16. Icehouse - Hey Little Girl
    17. The Psychedelic Furs - Pretty In Pink
    18. Fiction Factory - Feels Like Heaven
    19. Propaganda - Dr. Mabuse
    20. Freur - Doot Doot
    21. The Stranglers - Always The Sun
    22. Paul Young - Come Back And Stay
    23. Spandau Ballet - Through The Barricades
    24. Level 42 - Lessions In Love
    25. Eight Wonder - I'm Not Scared
    26. The Nits - In The Dutch Mountains
    27. Black - Wonderful Life

111 min. Video 4:3 Full Screen / Audio PCM Stereo.

The Audio & Video quality are very good (on all three discs) except for Tears For Fears Mad World, which is kinda blurry, out of focus and "scratchy".

    Could have done without:

Bros - god, I hated them back then
Black - Never liked that song plus the video is boring
Level 42 - They were never my kinda bag baby.. ugh
The Nits - Never heard of them before, boring song btw

    Loved:
One of the worst videos of the 80s: Wham! - Young Guns! Grade A Cheese!

    Disappointing:
Animotion - Would have rather seen the video for their first hit, "Obsession".

"Pop & Wave: Clip Mix No. 2"

    1. Kim Wilde - Chequered Love
    2. Yazoo - Don't Go
    3. Ultravox - Dancing With Tears In My Eyes
    4. The Human League - Human
    5. Savage Progress - My Soul Unwraps Tonight
    6. OMD - Dreaming
    7. The Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star
    8. Adam Ant - Goody Two Shoes
    9. Cyndi Lauper - She Bop
    10. Dead Or Alive - Lover Come Back
    11. Soft Cell - Bedsitter
    12. Erasure - Oh L'Amour
    13. Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Two Tribes
    14. Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Love Missle F1-11
    15. Trans-X - Living On Video
    16. Heaven 17 - Trouble
    17. ABC - The Night You Murdered Love
    18. Picnic At The Whitehouse - We Need Protection
    19. Living In A Box - Living In A Box
    20. Wham! - The Edge Of Heaven
    21. Spandau Ballet - Fight For Ourselves
    22. The Psychedelic Furs - Heaven
    23. Cock Robin - The Promise You Made
    24. Bangles - Walk Like An Egyptian
    25. Men At Work - Who Can It Be Now?
    26. Matthew Wilder - Break My Stride
    27. Paul Young - Wherever I Lay My Hat
    28. Prefab Sprout - The King Of Rock N' Roll
    29. Deacon Blue - Real Game Kid
    30. Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill
    31. Tears For Fears - Sowing The Seeds Of Love

134 min., Video 4:3 Full Screen, Audio 2.0 Stereo, 5.1 Dolby Digital, 5.1 DTS (!!!!!)

    Could have done without:
Wham! - Argh! Terrible song, terrible video
Matthew Wilder - OMG! No offense but that dude sure was ugly
Deacon Blue - boring, boring UK crap
    OMD - Yawn!

Loved: Adam Ant - Weird song but great video! and it has horror-babe Caroline Munro in it!
Kim Wilde - Damn, that's still one hell of a catchy tune. The video is very low budget but cool.
Bangles - Such a classic 80s video, but I guess you all know that.

Weird: Dead Or Alive - The singer was definitely Boy George's evil little brother with an eye patch.
Erasure - Ugh, the singer wearing sailor outfit and stockings!

Annoying: Trans-X - Euro dance trash at it's worst. Lyrics that make no sense whatsoever (sung with a thick euro-accent). Words cannot describe how much this video/song sucks heh
Soft Cell - Jebus! "Tainted Love" might have been a classic but this song/video made me cringe big time!

Disappointing: Human League - I like this song but it's somehow not fitting. They should have included "Don't You Want Me" or any of their other early 80s classics.

    "Wave Of The 80's"

There are a few songs/videos on this compilation that are also featured on the ones above so I'm only listing the new ones.

    1. David Bowie - Let's Dance
    2. Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
    3. Camouflage - The Great Commandment
    4. Kajagoogoo - Too Shy
    5. Gazebo - Lunatic
    6. Art Of Noise - Moments In Love
    7. Ultravox - Vienna
    8. Heaven 17 - Temptation
    9. Desireless - Voyage Voyage
    10. Culture Club - Do You Really Want To Hurt Me
    11. Talk Talk - Such A Shame
    12. Spandau Ballet - Gold
    13. Men Without Hats - Safety Dance
    14. Phillip Boa & The Voodooclub - Kill Your Ideals
    15. P.I.L. - This Is Not A Love Song
    16. Killing Joke - Love Like Blood
    17. Madness - Our House
    18. OMD - Maid Of Orleans
    19. Duran Duran - Wild Boys

110 min., Video Full Screen 4:3, Audio 2.0 Stereo

This compilation is a mixed bag. A few great classic 80's videos but also lots of useless euro trash. I absolutely LOVED Talk Talk/Such A Shame. Probably one of the best 80's videos I've ever seen. The Singer is quite a character actually. Watching him doing his thang, meaning, how many expressions can somebody make in 3 minutes? It's a real jaw dropper

Wow I want these compilations. Do you know what region they are? Are they R1 (US/Canada)?
I'm so glad you loved Such a Shame, Jamie. I'm a huge fan of Talk Talk, and Such a Shame was the first video from them I ever saw.

Oh Jamie, I forgot to mention, Mark Hollis (Talk Talk's lead singer) is a character. You should try to find the video for their song, "Dum Dum Girl" where he and the other band members go totally mad. It's another classic from them.

BlueMolly, I've seen almost every video of Talk Talk and I gotta admit that I didn't really liked them too much back then ... but watching them now made me go out and buy their greatest hits CD Their definitely cool in my book now!

There are some Region 0 discs from Disky Communications that feature 80s videos.

18 to a disc and a nice mixture of the well-known, the obscure, the album tracks and the one-hit-wonders.

If there's a Media Play near you, look in their Music DVD section and you'll find quite a few titles for various genres (pop, love songs, new wave, rap, rock and so on).

I've found some other cool Region 2 and 4 discs (love those rigged $95 players you can buy off eBay!):

Split Enz - All of their videos, plus live footage, discography, etc. Picture quality isn't the best but this is still a true gem! Bought it from an Australian site - atlanticdvd.com

Camouflage - there's a version of their German best-of with a bonus DVD of all their videos. I found my copy at sirendisc.com a few months ago. They also had the Propoganda remix CD with bonus DVD of videos...very cool!

Midge Ure - Rewind: Live At Shepherd's Bush Empire. I've heard this is coming out in the US soon, but I bought the import right away, as I attended the concert where it was filmed! Great show, and every Ultravox song was like an anthem to the crowd. There's also a Ultravox best-of DVD available from amazon.co.uk

Alison Moyet - Essential - all of her solo videos

There are some cool Region 1 DVDs available in Canada from HMV.com; remember that the Canadian dollar is weak compared to ours so many bargains are to be had:

a-ha - Live in Valhall - AWESOME live DVD from 2000 tour with videos from their excellent 2000 CD "Minor Earth Major Sky."

Tom Cochrane & Red Rider "Trapeze" - 18 videos in glorious DTS 5.1 surround - this is the best sounding music DVD I own. "Lunatic Fringe" sounds amazing when the guitar is split between 4 speakers!!! MTV played a few videos from them back in the day.

Yes - "Greatest Video Hits" - I'm no fan of prog rock, but I love the Trevor Rabin/Trevor Horn years from this band. This DVD includes all their cool '80s videos like "Leave It" and "Owner Of A Lonely Heart." 2.0 but the sound is still decent.

Oh, and coming out in the USA on 3/18: The Police "Every Breath You Take" collection, also remasted in DTS 5.1. Can't wait!!!!

Forgot this one - a Big Country DVD is available from their website (can't remember the URL) - "Ultimate Collection." 18 videos, DTS 5.1 (though not a strong mix) and available in a NTSC version!!!!! It's AMAZING.

    digital videos

Well, I dont do DVDs, but I do have, 80s videos on video CDs, see my site, maybe you can find something you like.

All of these were done by me (well, the editions, I used Adobe Premier, and other applications to restore and correct some aspects), they look beautiful on TV, and of course sound excellent (no weird noises).

    Well, see ya later!
