    Smile Up! More Lyrics!

All your friends tell me, that you care for me.
You hide all your feelings, and you're scared of me.
Well let me walk away all your fear.
Whisper sweet words into your ear.
Hold me close and don't try to run -
'Cause this love affair has just begun...

How about this one? Can somebody finish off this verse??

    well Sal-
that is the whole verse - next comes the chorus:

    Give your love to me-
    I want your love...
    Give your love to me-
    all through the night...
please don't try to hide what you feel inside for me...
    Give your love to me

Ok... I can already tell that I'm going to have to start recording some vinyl for the Freestyle80s webcast.

Most of the freestyle artists of the 80's were solo artists. TKA gets my vote for best freestyle group of the decade.

The freestyle show is every Tuesday and Thursday night but if you need a quick freestyle fix right now I have a freestyle stream playing right now. Maybe you can find it on www.Retro80s.com

Yes! I am the Freestyle King! bah. Well, I agree that TKA (Maria, Don't Be Afraid, One Way Love, Give Your Love to Me, Scars of Love, etc)were the Freestyle kings of the 80s. George Lamond (Where Does That Leave Love, Bad of the Heart, Without You, Love's Contagiouswas, Look Into My Eyes, etc) was the singular version. All great energetic music..

For the ladies, there were so many great artists.. Way to many to name.. I suppose if I had to choose a Freestyle Queen, it would have been Safire or Judy Torres. 'Lil Suzy shocked me in the 90's though. She kept Freestyle alive, and honestly I believe she brought it back.. In her early days, she had songs like "Love Can't Wait and Promise Me". When I heard Promise Me, I knew she was the next big Freestyle star.. Then she came out with "Can't Get You Out of my Mind" and she was officially (as far as I am concerned) the new Queen of Freestyle...

i agree! WE SHOULD ALL BOW DOWN TO SUZY!!!
i've loved her since she first came out with "Take Me..." and it was cool back then cuz we were the same age. the best thing about Suzy is that she's versatile! she could do freestyle, she could do house, and of course - she can definitely do euro. i'd have to say that she's one of the reigning queens of dance music.

Shannon will always be my Queen of Freestyle.

I know there are many artists who had greater commercial success. However, I can't recall any artist coming into the scene with their first single having the impact that "Let The Music Play" had, especially at a time (1983) when dance music in the United States was just about dead.

The song was a monster hit in the clubs, on the radio and it sold over a million copies. Not bad for your first record.

In my opinion, "Let The Music Play" was the birth of freestyle. I remember the first time I heard the song and how it left me with a feeling of "Wow! I've got to hear it again." The opening synth effects, the heavy bottom end on the drum... I had never heard anything like it before. Before "Let The Music Play" was released, nothing even came close to that sound.

I've been mixing dance music for 16 years now and I've only been hit that hard by a song a few times.

I'm not trying to take anything from Lil Suzy at all. I think she's great and I probably have everything she's released. But, when it comes to vocals, she really doesn't do much for me.

Take a listen to Shannon's "Give Me Tonight" and really listen to her vocal delivery, especially the last minute of the song when she cries out "Yes! I'll give you one more night!" It's pure passion. And, to me, that is what freestyle is all about.

Shannon was very lucky to have talented songwriters (Chris Barbosa and Ed Chisolm) that could paint such clear and vivid pictures using music and lyrics.

Shannon's producers Mark Ligget and Chris Barbosa left Emergency Records and started their own label, Ligosa. They kept the "Shannon sound" going for a few years with Monet's "Give In To Me" and the Loose Touch hit "Bad Of The Heart." (George Lamond and his cousin)

Most importantly, Shannon's songs have stood the test of time. "Let The Music Play", "Give Me Tonight", "My Heart's Divided" and "Do You Wanna Get Away" still pack the dance floor just like they did back in the 80's.

    Question

Freestyle?? eehhhh....ehhhhhh...I have followed this group with alot of curiosity. I've been DJ'ing in Europe for more than 16 years and I missed Freestyle. How do you define the music?? I'm looking at all these names and I know NONE of them!!!
OK, I know Shannon. And I know her sound, but is that freestyle?? Could anyone recommend a CD or two??

well, the reason you've probably missed out on freestyle is because it's mostly made here in the states or in canada. a freestyle track doesn't make it over seas unless it becomes a really big club hit. now, i know you've had to have heard of Expose' (come go with me/point of no return) even the Pet Shop Boys dabbled in freestyle with the song "domino dancing". there are so many freestyle cds available over here it's not even funny - so its kinda hard to choose one to suggest. if you want, i could even make you a lil freestyle sampler cdr. let me know....

well.. even if you lived in the US you missed out on freestyle unless you lived in certain parts of the country. The music received very little support from radio unless it was a station that played dance music or hot-mix shows.

if you have a connection to the internet faster than 56k and a program that can play mp3 streams (winamp, sonique) you can point your browser to http://www.retro80s.com/Webcast/Freestyle.pls and hear some good freestyle, hearthrob and latin hip-hop music. all three styles are very closley related. you can find more info about the different Retro80s webcasts (and access this message board as well - thanks sal!) at http://www.retro80s.com

Wow, I forgot about "Take Me In Your Arms" by Lil Suzy.. That was her first big hit.. That was the one when I realized she'd be a big hit. And the only reason I say she's the new Freestyle Queen is because she's the only one making anything good nowadays - well, actually - this was a couple of years ago when I still thought she held that title. "Can't Get You Out Of My Mind" was around the time I felt she had such an impact. But since then, there has been a few new artists doing pretty well.

But hey, with all this we're talking about - who could forget Judy Torres?

    Please Stay Tonight
    Love Story
    Come Into My Arms
Love You, Will You Love Me
    No Reason To Cry

    What awesome music....

    or cynthia........
she had one of the biggest freestyle hits that got airplay with "dreamboy/dreamgirl" (w/johnny o). she's been in the biz since '87 and has never left us (like india, george, sa-fire, and lisette). she's stayed true to her freestyle fans!

I love "No Reason To Cry." It's been a while since I've heard it so I think I'll play it tonight or tomorrow at the club.

    Thanks for reminding me.

That's true. Cynthia's been around for awhile too.. Endless Night and Change On Me were great songs too. Too bad they sounded so similar! hehe Well, they were hits anyway. She's had a few!

Yazoo! I hope everyone appreciated hearing "No Reason To Cry". That was an awesome song.. Still is! Always will be...
