I voted "other" for Randy Rhodes. Bass would be Cliff Burton.

For pure rock guitar, it's difficult to beat Edward Van Halen. I'm shocked he wasn't even an option -what's up with that?

Yeah, I know!! I should've included Eddie van Halen along with a few others, but hey!, that's what the "other" option is for

    Re: Greatest Rock Guitarists

While I like amny guitarist's in the world... my personal favourite and ultimate guitar hero of all time is the late great STEVE CLARK of Def Leppard.

He is the reason I play (or rather attempt to play) guitar.

I have always felt that Steve was so underrated it's criminal. He was really one of the finest musicians of my generation. Knew the rules of music, studied classical guitar... created some of the most amazing guitar music ever! And the guy was so damn cool on stage. he gave 110% every show he did... his stage performance was amazing.

Clark was just the coolest guy to ever play guitar IMO

    Cheers.

    Re: Greatest Rock Guitarists

I know I'm new here to this forum, but my vote's have to go for the 2 main influences on my style and being a musician overall. And those two are Mr. Randall Rhoads and Mr. Steve Stevens. While I probably don't need to comment much on Randy's style or ability, I'd like to state how much greater Steve was than what we saw with Billy Idol. As well as seeing past his fun with effects like the laser gun (which I actually enjoy for what it was). He is a true musician's musician. He not only is a fantastic guitarist, but he can play many instruments with great aptitiude and sonic ability. And he also has a vast music vocabulary in Jazz, Fusion, Flamenco, etc. I like Hendrix also, but never really listened enough to of him to make a right decision. But I greatly respect his innovations and creative style. Too bad this is limited to rock as I think talents such as Al Di Meola, BB King, etc. in different catagorizations are truly some of the world's best.

Then they would be in the Jazz or Blues forum.

Believe me, I could add a thousand guitarists to this list, but since it's the "hard rock/glam" forum, we're a little limited.

I could not vote. Way too hard.

1.Jimi....He did things at the time that even boggled the mines of Clapton, Townshead, Dylan to name a few.
2.BBBBUUUTTT. I think if Randy Rhoads would have lived longer he would have done the same.
    3. SRV, Has got to be the CLEANEST Blues player I have ever heard.
    4. But then you have Chett Atkins..
    5.Your killing me!!!!!
6.Steve Vai's album. "Little green men?" WOW!!!
    7. Eddie V H...Awesome hammerer.....
8.ohhh the dude from Dokken...very good!
    9. Angus Young, Simple but fun!!!

OK!!!!!! I will have to go with SRV.........

Here's one I haven't seen yet, Tom Scholz of Boston. Maybe not the greatest as far as pure playing ability but he did develop one of the most melodic sounds that I've ever heard on electric guitar.

    Re: Greatest Rock Guitarists

Can I say this without getting my butt kicked? SRV is just a wannabe Jimi. I say Hendrix all the way. Okay, I'm not a guitarist (I know about fifteen chords, but all you need is 3, right? ), but my husband is an amazing guitarist and he's schooled me on all the guitar greats. I've done my homework and no one comes close to Jimi.

    Question Re: Greatest Rock Guitarists

Eddie Van Halen is the man period. Hendrix was the first guitar god. He did some very groundbreaking things. Eddie just blows him away talent wise. Why wasn't he on this list any?!?!?!?!?

    Re: Greatest Rock Guitarists

Man, I have to go with Beck. Problem with Beck is he is not a strict "rock" guitarist. There was once a joke passed around when a guy asked what effects Beck used on a song and was told Beck's fingers are his effects. The guy just elevates playing to new levels. As a strict "rock" guitarist I have to go for Hendrix, Van Halen, or Townshend, the inovators of their styles. Remember, Pete is credited with "THE POWER CHORD". From that the music we all love evolved, and Pete proved you don't have to be a virtuoso to rock.

    Re: Greatest Rock Guitarists

I'll tell you something...I've fallen off the Eddie Van Halen bandwagon pretty quick. Saw VH at the Pepsi Arena in Albany two weeks ago, and Eddie has done the same solo now for almost 30 years. Not impressed in the LEAST.

In that time, he has not evolved as a player ONE BIT. He's doing the same exact things he did in the late 70's, proving once and for all that he's a one trick pony. To say he blows away Hendrix is without a doubt just being fooled by flash. Hendrix could take a piece of shit guitar, run it through a tiny amp with no effects, and still amaze people...and he was ALWAYS finding ways to evolve his playing. I'm sure if he had all the toys and gear that Eddie was afforded, he would have come up with things that would STILL be boggling player's minds.

If you're going to go by "blowing people away", Yngwie sweeps the floor with Eddie. I have heard stories, from NUMEROUS people who have seen it, that Eddie almost lost his mind when Yngwie hit the scene, because he knew he wasn't the fastest gun in the West anymore.

Try listening to Michael Romeo of Symphony X. The man plays CIRCLES around Eddie.
