Um...hun....how about "other" for a choice? You left out "Saving Private Ryan", "Tora, Tora, Tora", "The Dirty Dozen" and about 100 other great war films!

    "Commando" is a war movie???

Since this is the 80sxchange I assumed we were after 80s war movies....so my fave would be easily Full Metal Jacket.

For modern era: I had to go w/ Apocolypse Now. Platoon is my 2nd choice.

For old school: Galipoli and Dirty Dozen

    Re: Favorite WAR movie

    some thoughts:

    - i would've picked 'Hamburger Hill', regardless of what choices were given, as the "purest". have stayed up to 2,3,4 AM to watch to the end, countless times. i think 'the thin red line' is even better. i wish this had gotten more attention.

    - FMJ is overrated. it's great... but not *that* great.

    - Hamburger Hill, Saving Private Ryan, Galipolli, Deer Hunter.... all have unforgettable scenes. in a few years, i'll probably add 'when we were soldiers' to that list as well....

    - 'platoon' is my 2nd fave movie of all-time... despite all that it is, i don't really think of it as a war movie. even from the very first viewing, i've always seen this as a very personal and individual story, and the backdrop becomes secondary.

    - 'apocalypse now'(/redux/heart(s) of darkness) is my all-time favorite, by a far, far margin. only upon my first viewing, at 13, in 1980, did i think of it as a war movie. seeing it the 2nd time in college, i realized... it's far-reaching messages and statments were so far beyond what the eye shows is happening on the screen. it wasn't until 6 or 7 years ago that i finally saw 'hearts', and AHA! (fist pump), my sentiments validated. regarding 'redux': so much to say about it, and this isn't the place for it.

for me, there's no other title that has been as unique nor as deeply rewarding a viewing experience. as i said before, i don't consider this to be a "war movie" or even about Vietnam, despite the fact that the war itself is the "star" of the movie and there's alot of personal/political statement towards that topic. but i know i'm in the vast minority on this one... most see it as trippy visuals/audio and memorable lines/characters.

i wouldn't have arrived at this state of appreciation and reverence if i had taken this movie in a different progression: seeing it as a child in a theater; seeing it again, at intermittent periods in my life; learning so much about Coppola's vision and the logistics of the shoot in the documentary... and then, as an adult with all that added wisdom and experience that life gives you, seeing it again, in state-of-the-art Y2K big screen surround sound with all the added footage.

    ok, back to reality...

Voted "Platoon" since I went with the 80s theme here. Otherwise I would choose other for "Black Hawk Down" or "Saving Private Ryan". But there's soo many great war movies, that my pick could change any day

    Re: Favorite WAR movie

Apocalypse Now. I saw it for the first time in the 80s so that makes it an 80s movie for me right? I remember just sitting there with my jaw dropped at it all. The Deer Hunter had about the same effect on me, and I only first saw that one a couple years ago.

    Re: Favorite WAR movie

    I voted for other

If I had to specify a favourite 80's war movie it would be "Das Boot" adn for all time I choose Sam Peckinpah's Cross of Iron.

One major gripe I have about war movies, especially in the 60's and 70's were the lack of historical realism in the production of said movies. For example one film I always enjoyed was "A Bridge too Far". It's a cracking movie but to see American M60 and M48 tanks with Crosses painted on the side and be expected to "pretend" that their German WWII tanks is too much! If you're going to do a war film get it right Another problem is watching American Trainer aircraft pose as German Messerschmidt fighters. AAAARRGGHHHHH!!!
This has been somewhat redressed in films of late such as "Saving Private Ryan" or especially "Band of Brothers". I know this seems geeky but as I say if you're going to do something , then do it right!!!
