Mountains remind Elton of drug abuse

Sir Elton John says that when he sees snow-covered Alpine mountains it reminds him of wilder drug-fuelled days as a young musician.

"When I fly over the snow-covered Alps, all I think about is the 'snow' that I once took," he told German magazine Neon, explaining that the word snow is often used as a synonym for cocaine.

The 57-year-old pop star said he took "a lot" of cocaine when he was younger.

"Somebody once calculated that I spent 70 million dollars every 20 months in the 80s. What for? Amongst other things cocaine."

I wonder whose peaks he was snorting off of? It was a confusing time for young Elton.

"Somebody once calculated that I spent 70 million dollars every 20 months in the 80s. What for? Amongst other things cocaine."

Let's see.... $70 million worth of --amongst other things-- cocaine every 20 months (I'm not sure why somebody would be dividing Elton's illegal drug expenditures into 20 month increments, but hey, at least they were keeping track). By my calculations, that's $3.5 million per month. If you extrapolate Elton's illicit drug use -- amongst other things -- over the course of the entire decade of the 80s, he spent a grand total of *cha-ching* $420 million during that time period.

That's right: $420 million worth of cocaine --amongst other things-- during the 80s. If you'll allow me to put $420 million in perspective, that figure exceeds (by more than $30 million) the combined gross national product (GNP) of Tonga and the British Virgin Islands.

Anyway, I read that figure and I thought: If I knew somebody who was spending $70 million on cocaine --amongst other things-- every twenty months, well, call me a nosey-parker, but I'd be inclined to suggest to them that they might have a little problem.
