How could I forget Jim Steinman, one of my favorite songwriters EVER? I love his songs, they're so epic and powerful.

My favorite is Elton John. I don't know if he's the greatest but he's my favorite!

I had to choose other...For my tastes, you can't go one up on Pete Townsend. Many a Townsend track makes my top 100.

Good choice Bogie!
Was listening to some Billy Joel this morning....no matter HOW many times I've heard it, "Goodnight Saigon" still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Brilliant, brilliant song...

Don't be dissin Des man, the man has wrote more great songs than just about anyone.
Start rummaging through your Kiss & Cooper records for starters, we'll ignore LaVidaLoca or whatever, but a man's gotta eat. He's written for just about everyone. I like his songwriting style.

I voted for Freddie Mercury because I thought he had a unique style all his own above all the rest. Even if I am a huge Zeppelin fan.

Re: Probably the TOUGHEST poll to choose from!
I voted them all except for Billy Joel (sorry, he's not profound enough for me as a songwriter). The top would be Lennon/McCartney and followed by Elton John/Bennie Turpin.

Not trying to start an argument or laugh Tanya....
Billy Joel isn't profound yet the man who wrote "I am The Walrus" and the man who wrote "Jamaica Jerk-Off" are?
Sorry, that just struck me as humorous.

Re: Probably the TOUGHEST poll to choose from!
Too funny!
Don't get wrong. There are many Billy Joel songs I adore (e.g. Piano Man, A Matter of Trust are just a few). I guess when I scrolled down the list I was amazed that he was in the same category with Lennon/McCartney and Bernie/Elton, that's all.
BTW, you try placing googoogagoob in a song!

Re: Probably the TOUGHEST poll to choose from!
I picked other. Had to go with my fellow Canadian Rik Emmett.
As lead singer for Triumph, he wrote some of the greatest Rock songs with his band mates Gil Moore and Mike Levine, but in the 90's, he wrote and recorded some wonderful pop rock songs that became big hits for him in Canada.
His 1990 hits When A Heart Breaks and Saved By Love was a different change in sound to that of Triumph, but it worked and they became just wonderful songsLast edited by whistledog; 3-22-05 at 05:53 PM.

From a Songwriting Success Story standpoint alone, I HAD to go with McCartney/Lennon. They were ahead of their time.
