I was listening to the Basquiat soundtrack over the weekend. Love this version by Them (featuring Van Morrison)

"The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense.
Take what you have gathered from coincidence.
The empty-handed painter from your street
Is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets.
The sky, too, is folding over you
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

Leave your stepping stones behind, something calls for you.
Forget the dead you've left, they will not follow you.
Your lover who just walked out the door
Is standing in the clothes that you once wore.
The carpet too, is moving under you
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

Strike another match girl, start anew
And it's all over now, Baby Blue."

"You snatch tune, you a match a cigarette,
She pulls the eyes out with a face like a magnet.
I don't know how much more of this I can take.
She's filing her nails while they're dragging the lake.

    She is watching the detectives.
    Ooh, it's so cute!
    She is watching the detectives
Oh, and they shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot.
They beat him up until the teardrops start,
But he can't be wounded 'cause he's got no heart."
    Boom! Boom!
    Waaahahahahaha!

Grapefruit moon, one star shining, shining down on me.
Heard that tune, and now I'm pining, honey, can't you see?
'Cause every time I hear that melody, well, something breaks inside,
And the grapefruit moon, one star shining, can't turn back the tide.

Never had no destination, could not get across.
You became my inspiration, oh but what a cost.
'Cause every time I hear that melody, well, something breaks inside,
And the grapefruit moon, one star shining, is more than I can hide.

Now I'm smoking cigarettes and I strive for purity,
And I slip just like the stars into obscurity.
'Cause every time I hear that melody, well, puts me up a tree,
And the grapefruit moon, one star shining, is all that I can see.

"Grapefruit Moon" - Tom Waits (from Closing Time)
... stuck in my head for the last week, along with its CD-mate "I hope that I don't fall in love with you"... not such a bad affliction.

    Is making me sad again"

    "and if you said
    'jump in the river'
    I would because
    it would probably
    be a good idea.

    you're not supposed
to be here at all now.
    it's all been a
    gorgeous mistake.

    sick one or clean one.
    the best one
    that God
    ever made."
    *****

    if you want me
    you can find me
    left off center
    off of the strip.

    and in the outskirts
    and in the fringes,
    in the corners
    out of the grip.

    and when they ask me
    'what are you looking at?'
    i always answer
    'Nothing much.'
    not much.
    i think they know that
    i'm looking at them.
    i think they think i
    must be out of touch.

But i'm only in the outskirts
    and in the finges..
    .......
    and if you want me
    you can find me
    left off center
    wondering all about you.
    ***********

    '....no longer mad.
    like a horse
    i'm still wild,
    but not lost from the
    thing that i've chosen
    to be.

    and it's
    cause you've thrilled me.
    silenced me
    stilled me.
    proved things i
    never believed.
    ahh.

    the face on you
    the smell of you
    will always be with me.'

talking about "Some Kind of Wonderful" reminded me of this one,,,

    the beat's so lonely
i bet it's lonely at the top.
    she hesitates.
but the beat will never stop.
    .....
    wanting him only,
that's the secret that she keeps.
    come on, baby.
    you know there's something
    missing.
    don't find nothing.
    no more coincidences...

heard this song today and i almost cried.

    'England's not the
    mythical land of
    Madam George and roses.
    it's the home of police
who kill black boys on mopeds.

    And, I love my boy.
    and that's why i'm leaving.
i don't want him to be aware
    that there's
    any such thing as grieving.'

    *****
    you say,
    "oh,like winter in july,
    a barren river wide."
    I'll pray for the flood
    to wash on you.
    it's here
    i'll be with you.

    i will fall,
    i will fall,,

    on your knife.

Ah, broken is the golden bowl! - the spirit flown forever! Let the bell toll! - a saintly soul floats on the stygian river; And Guy De Vere, hast thou no tear? - weep now or never more! See! on yon drear and rigid bier low lies thy love, Lenore! Come, let the burial rite be read - the funeral song be sung! - An anthem for the queenliest dead that ever died so young. A dirge for her the doubly dead in that she died so young. "Wretches! ye loved her for her wealth and ye hated her for her pride, And, when she fell in feeble health, ye blessed her that she died. How shall the ritual, then, be read? The requiem how be sung by you, by yours, the evil eye, by yours the slanderous tongue. That did to death the innocence that died, and died so young?" Peccavimus;yet rave not thus! But let a Sabbath song go up to God so solemny the dead may feel no wrong! The sweet Lenore "Hath gone before," with hope that flew beside, Leaving thee wild for the dear child that should have been thy bride, For her, the fair and debonair, that now so lowly lies, The life upon her yellow hair, but not within her eyes. The life still there upon her hair, the death upon her eyes. "Avaunt! - avaunt! from fiends below the indignant ghost is riven. From Hell unto a high estate within the Heaven, from grief and groan to a golden throne beside the King of Heaven! Let no bell toll, then! lest her soul, amid its hallowed mirth, Should catch the note as it doth float up from the damned Earth! And I! tonight my heart is light! no dirge will I upraise, But waft the angel on her flight with a paean of old days!"

Can you figure out what poem this is?

Ted, that sounds like Shelley to me but I can't remember the name... or maybe Byron. Perhaps more Byron than Shelley.

I am not up on my 19th-c British poetry anymore, LOL!

    i was right..yay!

i thought of Lord Bryon, but no, i always thought of what i read from him more romantic.
Poe's a bit more into his own world.

    end of poetry lesson 101
(not that it has any truth at all)

in times like today, i like songs like this:

    'turn around
    look at what you see.
    Dream a dream.
and what you see will be.

    Rhymes that keep their secrets
    will unfold behind the clouds.
    and there upon the rainbow
    is the answer to a
    neverending story..'

    Nice one Vilji.

"I was walking in the park
    Dreaming of a spark
When I heard the sprinklers whisper
Shimmer in the haze of summer lawns.
Then I heard the children singing.
They were running through the rainbows.
They were singing a song for you
Well it seemed to be a song for you.
The one I wanted to write for you, for you.

Lavenders blue, dilly dilly, lavenders green.
When I am King, dilly dilly, you will be Queen.
A penny for your thoughts my dear,
A penny for your thoughts my dear,
I.O.U. for your love, I.O.U. for your love."

By the way Ted, my family's Irish but my accent is British. I get picked on regularly because of this. In a humorous way of course.

    "Your breath is sweet
Your eyes are like two jewels in the sky.
Your back is straight, your hair is smooth
On the pillow where you lie.
    But I don't sense affection
    No gratitude or love
Your loyalty is not to me
    But to the stars above.

One more cup of coffee for the road,
One more cup of coffee 'fore I go
    To the valley below.

    ...

    Your sister sees the future
    Like your mama and yourself.
You've never learned to read or write
There's no books upon your shelf.
And your pleasure knows no limits
Your voice is like a meadowlark
But your heart is like an ocean
    Mysterious and dark.

One more cup of coffee for the road,

    I know. Dammit.

My parents were huge Stones fans and I spent most of my early childhood car journeys listening to the Stones - on 8 Tracks no less. I'll never be able to shake them out of my psyche.

Tacky and obvious I know (my mother would kill me for ever being obvious). But after last night's dream I just can't resist.

The word that would best describe this feeling
    Would be haunted
I touch the clothes you left behind
They still retain your shape and lines
    Still haunted
I trace the outline of your eyes
    They're in the mirror hypnotized
    I'm haunted
    I find a solitary hair
    Golden still I remenisce
    I'm haunted

    Haunted by your soul
    Haunted by your hair
    Haunted by your clothes
    Haunted by your eyes
By your soul, by your hair
By your clothes, by your eyes
By your voice, by your smile
By your mouth, by your soul
By your hair, by your clothes
By your eyes, by your voice
By your smile, by your mouth
    By your soul

    Haunted
    Boom! Boom!
    Waaahahahahaha!

    wow..

    obvious?

try getting a bit 'excited' while being at the college library.

    not good.

    but fun.

obvious is the way it should be for a guy.

    'show me how you do that trick;
the one that makes me scream'
    she said.
'the one that makes me laugh'
    she said.
and threw her arms around my head.
'show me how you do it.
    and i promise you,
    i promise that
    i'll run away with you.
    i'll run away with you.'
