1984 Grad New Here
Registered today!
I'm Heidi, lived in Ohio, married the Army, moved around, now I;m back while my husband is overseas.
Graduated in 1984 and did I ever live the 80s.
I had feathered hair, spiked hair, long bobbypinned hair, curling iron fried hair, you name it.
I did the preppy look, the New Wave look with skinny ties and safety pins on my shirts, the Kamikaze look with red baggy pants and shirt and headband with Japanese characters on them, I had parachute pants with a superlong belt wrapped around my waist and through my legs, flat slouchy suede boots, I did the cheesy Peasant look once with long Little House skirt and ruffled blouse, we did the 50s look when the Stray Cats were big, crippled my feet in cowboy boots, the dropwaist dress look, I guess I did it all at one time or another. I even bought a little miniskirt in the early 80s, when you didn't wear them unless you were brave. I was laughed out of school! I still have a pair of red Reebok hightops, and I refuse to stop buying new Bass loafers. Oh how I remember wearing old Bass shoes with Klein or Vanderbilt jeans and a colored Izod alligator shirt!
I remember my school had the usual cliques: The freaks (hood types living in the 70s who smoked and wore leather wallets with chains), jocks (athletes), geeks (I was one sort of), preppies, punk rockers, sluts (yes we called certain girls sluts, in our day you didn't boast about sex), and the cheerleaders.
The 80s were great. It wasn't hard, even in our small town, to find a job.
Videos were new, and we would watch them in the morning before coming to class. I remember one morning in my first period chemistry class talking about Bad to the Bone which was new. MTV was fun when it was new. Everyone tried to do something original, no "put some blonde in front of the camera with some other idiots behind her dancing" formats. They were like mini-movies. We would have raised hell if someone had done songs about raping women and killing cops. No one called each other "ho" unless they wanted to start a fight.
My parents divorced when I graduated, and I didn't get to go to college. I wish I had found some way to go. I have gone since, but haven't finished. Hard to go when you move a lot.
We had some really mean, nasty snobs at my school. It wasn't an enjoyable time.
That's me to put it briefly.

Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.
