    Does anyone remember English Beat?

Back in the 80s English Beat had a hit with an awesome song called "Save It For Later." They seemed to dissapear after that. I think, if I'm not mistaken that their front man joined another band but I'm not sure. Does anyone know?

I have never been into that band but i do remember General Public had 2 members from The Beat, they were pretty much one hit wonders with the song "Tenderness". The Beat were recently featured on VH1s' Bands Reunited but they failed to get the original lineup together.

The Beat were awesome, they weren't punk or goth so i don't know how that got here! They were part of the late '70's Ska scene that spawned Madness and The Specials to name a few. They were originally on the Jerry Dammer's Two Tone label but signed to Arista's 'Go Feet' label where they released a good few albums. Try to get hold of a copy of their greatest hits on CD. Look for songs like:
    Tears Of A Clown
    Mirror In The Bathroom
Can't Get Used to Losing You,
    etc.
    Great band, released three albums,
    'I Just Can't Stop It'
    Wha'ppen
    Special Beat Service

Ranking Roger and Dave Wakeling went on to form General Public, who were much bigger in the US than here. Two others went on to form Fine Young Cannibals with Roland Gift.

Yeah What Gazza said, they were part of the Ska Scene in Britain in the late 70's along with such bands as The Selector, The Specials, Bad Manners and Madness. I think they belonged to the "Two-Tone" label as well

Re: Does anyone remember English Beat?

I remember the English Beat as the only band that had a song with my name in it...Jeanette....

"I met Jeanette. Substitute Ronette. She said will you remember? Said I could never forget her. All naturalette. Her mom's a millionette. So we shared one last cigarette and swapped false addresses."

I still remember the whole song, but I won't bore y'all with more lyrics.

PS...if anyone has this song in mp3 format....I'd really like to have it on my ipod.

Dave Wakeling had a 1987 solo hit with the title track from the movie "She's Having A Baby".

Fantastic band! I went to see lead singer Dave Wakeling in concert twice in the last year. He said that the next tour he was hoping that Rankin Roger would come as well.

That would be awesome if they got back together again. BTW That's cool that you brought that thread back out. I started that a long time ago.

Great band. Saw them a couple years back in Toronto on the reunion circuit. Really nice to see them at the Horseshoe which is nicely intimate. I dont mind that they are getting old.... 'cause so am I lol.

Still lots of fun to see them. Only disappointments were not having Rankin' Roger there. And the only song they didnt play was my favourite, Whine & Grine/Stand Down Margaret. Always thought it was clever how they worked an old Prince Buster ska standard in with an anti Thatcher song.

Still, it was a great show. Skanking full stop, baby!
