Question about rep comments & PMs

Okay, I'm NOT trying to stir up any past issues or bullshit (I swear, I love you guys!), I just wanted to know if it's true that rep comments & PMs are visible to the moderators??

Re: Question about rep comments & PMs

Any admin of a system can view anything they want They have to be able to in order to have full control over the system.

However, I can tell you from experience, that most admins don't spend time looking through stuff like that because it takes a LOT of time. Unless there is a problem -- patterns that are suspicious, a big drain on bandwidth that shouldn't be there, etc. -- most admins let people just be themselves.

But just be aware, here, at work, on any other forum, etc., that admins do have control over that, and they have the right and obligation to check out problems, whether those problems be computer or people related.

NOTHING you do on the Internet or Web is ever completely anonymous, someone will always be able to see it, it's just that most people, if they are ethical, don't act like snoops and spend their time making people miserable.

If you have something you would like to keep private, use an off-board e-mail where it will be less likely to be seen by anyone other than you and your recipient and some anonymous lackey somewhere (I've been the lackey, and I know that most of us don't give a shit about anything unless it's illegal or messing up what we have to do.)

    YES, they can see it.

There's no option in vBulletin that'll allow admins to simply look at private messages. However, if you're familiar with MySQL, you could decipher messages there. I'm not quite sure how to do that and I'm not interested in learning. If anything, I'm a designer, not a programmer..

That is one that I learned a little on. I couldn't for the life of me figure it out now without my book. AMAZING how much I have forgotten (sigh).

Is there a snap-in or toolkit available to you?

And, I thought you might have the server permissions set like that, that's good.

No, you don't want to learn MySQL, it made me NUTS, but it will floor you how powerful it can be. And the stuff you can do.

I occasionally temp for a company where I have access to shit and man, the stuff that people will do and think they are getting away with it. I'm just glad I wasn't actually THERE the day they has to confront a dude about all the porn he was looking at at work. Since I temp, I didn't have to be part of that crap!

Anyway, I ramble. No, Sal, stay as far away from programming as you can, and then run another 100 feet for good measure. It damn near made an axe murderer out of me (c++, red hat and sql) and my hubby (v-basic). We need you here!

Re: Question about rep comments & PMs

Hey, I really would LOVE to know programing and database stuff. If I did, I'd surely build lots of interesting, innovative websites. I have so many ideas. But I'm limited to html. And BASIC on a Commodore.

As for reading private messages, there's no functionality built into a standard vBulletin - but I suppose with the right knowledge, it can be added in...

Re: Question about rep comments & PMs

I used to Admin a Forum which also ran Vbulletin (Jasper was On it as well). I never had the option of seeing people's PM's nor their Reps. I'm sure it can be configured that way, but most Admins (And I'm sure Sal is no exception) respect the privacy of their members enough to not use that feature.

Re: Question about rep comments & PMs

Rep comments can be seen by an admin. I know this for a fact. Not sure about pm's

You are better off to keep anything really private in you personal email.

Depends on the software and the way it is configured! As for the Xchange, It runs Vbulletin which rules out the ability for admins and Mods to read PM's unless you have the proper add-on. Apparently Sal doesn't have the add-on and from What I gather from Sal, he has no need or desire for such add-on.

In my opinion, if an admin needs to have this ability, he's not in it for the right reasons.

Reps..again I don't know about 80sxchange (I would assume no), but I know on the board I ran, we didn't have that option.

Sal is right though, to read a PM, you need to go through a LOT of MYSQL code, and it's not that easy! It's a pain in the ass!! Too much work to be worth the effort.

Exactly. I think someone would really have to have WAY too much time on their hands for that.

EXACTLY!!!! "In the database"!!! At the risk of sounding like a broken record, have you tried to disect MYSQL Databases???

Do those other sites use Vbulletin? Do they use the add-ons?? Like I said, I used to Admin a vbulletin board. We DID NOT see PM's. We Did Not have the add-on.

Tell ya what? PM Someone and Ask Sal if he can read it!

I want to make clear that I am not insinuating that is something Sal has done.

I'll just leave it at this. I seriously doubt that even if he had the ability (Not arguing whether or not he does), Sal is not the kind of guy to use it.

Re: Question about rep comments & PMs

Rep is easily seen via Admin CP. In fact, you can even give specified user groups the ability to see rep and who gave it. That being said, I don't even bother looking at that - and it's an option in the control panel. Private Messages are another story altogether. There may be a hack or addon that allows the ability to read private messages. I don't know and have never researched the possibility. I bearly have enough time to participate here. And I really don't care what people talk about behind closed doors...
