    Phil Collins Retires

    *From undercover.com.au:

    Phil Collins Retires
    by Paul Cashmere - April 27 2008

Music legend Phil Collins is to retire from the music business. The former drummer, turned lead singer for Genesis, solo superstar and producer extraordinaire says it is time to quit.

57-year-old Collins told The Times that he has no more plans to record or perform in the future.

In fact, he was in a state of self-imposed retirement when his Genesis band mates coaxed him out of the house for a reunion tour last year.

Collins current favourite past time is collecting memorabilia from the Battle of the Alamo.

Collins has had an amazing career spanning more than 40 years. Few know that Phil got his first break with thanks to The Beatles. As a 13 year old, he was an extra in the movie A Hard Day's Night.

Maybe that is where the love of acting started. Years later, he would star in the movie Buster and supply a voice for the movie 'The Jungle Book 2'. Let's not forget the countless soundtracks that he composed for movies like 'Against All Odds', 'White Knights', 'Tarzan' and 'Buster'.

Collins joined Genesis as the drummer in 1971 but in 1975, after the departure of Peter Gabriel, he took up lead vocals. The result Ö the band's first hit song 'Follow You Follow Me'.

At the peak of Genesis' commercial success, Collins launched a sideline solo career. The resulting album was bigger than he ever imagined. 'Face Value' featured the song that went on to become his signature tune, 'In The Air Tonight'.

Phil Collins was unstoppable in the 80s. When he turned to production, he made a solo hit for Abba's Frida with 'I Know There's Something Going On'. The song had his template drum sound and became her only solo global hit.

Collins last solo album was 'Testify' in 2002'. Last year, Genesis released a live album from their 2007 tour.

So has Phil Collins really, really retired? He claims he will still write because he can't stop that. Somehow I don't think this story really has ended.

Wow... kinda sad to hear Phil's retiring from music. He's been such a fixture over the years with so many amazing songs. We'll miss you, Phil!

I’m sorry cause I know this is gonna piss some people off but ever since he became the biggest pussy in music, I’ve had no use for him. See ya, Phil. Maybe you and Olivia Newton John can get together and release a Muszak Greatest Hits album, huh?

Hey Tempest the zombies are after you and I'm not going to protect you. Ya don't diss the Phil man. I've been a fan of his for years now, and it's sad to read this. IMHO, he's a very talented musician and the reason people don't like him is because they are jealous of his talent.

I think he's one of the best. A real tallent.
Thinking about it, I don't think we've seen the last of him. If he does end up writing for other people, his music will live on through them, along with his own hits.

That's sad news as far as I'm concerned. He's one of my favourite solo performers. Too bad I'll never get to see him live.

I suppose the end was coming after he tried to break up the band "Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld."

Seriously, though, Phil Collins was a creative musician with soul. I liked his duet with Philip Bailey most, along with the classic Genesis song: "Illegal Alien"

I thought he was a hell of a drummer. I got to see Genesis for the first time this past September on their reunion tour.

It's sad to hear, but after 40 years of performing he's earned the time to do whatever he wants.
We all want to get to that point in our lives.

    Cool Re: Phil Collins Retires

I admit that i was a little surprised to hear this. Then again, i was surprised to hear that he is 57. Always been a fan from his time in Genesis to the solo stuff. Awesome drummer too, to sing and play drums at the same time can't be easy.

    Re: Phil Collins Retires

Steve, some people think Phil became a wuss when he became a pop musician. Some people never liked him when he became lead singer to Genesis after Peter Gabriel left. I know some people who think Genesis went downhill after that point. I don't think Phil is a pussy, I just don't like some of his music after Genesis. He did better with Genesis, IMHO.

I don't think he was a pussy either. I liked what he did with Genesis, and his solo work as well. He's a hell of a singer, song writer and drummer. I don't think we've seen the last of him.

    Re: Phil Collins Retires

I really liked a lot of Phil's solo work in the 80's and I liked his songs with Genesis until 1986. However, I would rather see him retire from performing than to hang on and try in vain to stay relevant. That "Take Me Home" reworking with Bone Thugs n' Harmony was just embarrassing!

I wish I could have seen him perform. I was a huge fan in the 80s. I liked his work both solo and with Genesis.
