Cool How many years did new wave last?

Some people debate 1978 to 1984 with a resurgence in 1987.

Always so hard to put dates around things like this. For example, if you count Parallel Lines as a New Wave album (as most would) then that means that Blondie listened to other forms of music, drew the influence and came up with New Wave all between January and June of '78. Unlikely, I would posit.

But yeah, there is not much evidence of it around pre-'78 in terms of releases. The Motors were kicking around before this and Tom Robinson released 2-4-6-8 Motorway in '77 which should certainly be considered early New Wave. I am sure there are a million other useful examples like Elvis Costello releasing Watching the Detectives in October '77.

As far as the ending...well I think that happened the day Duran Duran came out I remember it well. But then many others might say The Killers, Modest Mouse, MGMT, et al, have kept it alive and well until today.

I will leave it to more clever minds than mine to sort it all out. But of one thing I am sure... I love it all

LOL. Not knocking them at all Moll

But for those of us a bit older at the time it seemed like something a little underground and sinister just became parent friendly. It changed things for some of us. There was still a lot of good music coming out but there was a definite change in tone. The rebellion seemed to have gone out of things a little.

Not suggesting for a minute it was because of Duran Duran. They just glided along on the wave that was coming in. And they did it spectacularly!

wasn't Duran Duran pop, more of what you'd call a boy band by todays standards ? and I'm not saying that to anger people , but to me Duran Duran didn't have much in common with Elvis Costello, The Knack and that handsome Joe Jackson fellow

Would you consider Kraftwerk new wave? If so they predate 1978. Lke Bogie said it's hard to pinpoint.

Red face Re: How many years did new wave last?

The movement started in the late seventies, while the greater Modernist movement was busy dying, however, new wave probably faded in the mid 80's as pop began to produce more polished acts like Wham! and A-Ha. Nobody really cared whether you wanted the change the world really. In all honesty New Wave was always threatened with the advent of The New Romantics and Futurists. www.eightiesmusicfan.blogspot.com

1978-1985 Probably most notable years. I would say it was the more Guitar Led Bands but some which used Synth's. Tubeway Army(Gary Numan), Ultravox!, Blondie, Devo, Magazine we're all classed as New Wave. But all very unique compared to each other. In Britain it's now known as Post Punk but that term is more attached to bands making New Wave style tracks again. The New Romantic movement started probably in 78 with the album Ultravox - Systems Of Romance but was not popular to later. The Futurist era can date back to Kraftwerk but Gary Numan pretty much became the face of it years later in the late 70s with the Tubeway Album Replicas. 1985 is when the originality left and Bland Pop took over the Charts. But that's my personal opinion from what I've read and heard.
