    Favorite Rock Anthem?

    What was yours?
There were a ton of them in the 80's, so I know I'm gonna see some of your choices and say "Man, that was a great song!" But, for now my choice is 'We're not Gonna Take It' by Twisted Sister!!! It was a great song that propelled them to the top, it was from an album that proved to be the pinnacle of their career. It was a I got a chip on my shoulder, I dare you to knock it off type of song. It sort of defined an attitude at the time (we we're sick of disco and were not gonna take anymore of that crap).

Guys, guys, guys...(and gals) even though it wasn't recorded in the 80's, the greatest rock anthem of all time will always be "Rock & Roll All Nite" by KISS. Hands down....nothing even comes close.

Gotta agree with Not Man and apologize for laughing Trixter. I never considered Starship to be rock. Paul Kantner's was a nice guy when I met him though!

I think of a favorite Rock Anthem as being song that sticks in your mind over the years, no matter how many years have gone by, and I have three of those.

    "Final Countdown" by Europe
    "Jump" by Van Halen
...and even though the last one is from 1971...
"Stairway To Heaven" by Led Zeppelin

Is Kiss considered Glam Rock, then? "Rock And Roll All Night" is a good choice, but not my choice. No one has mentioned "(You Can Still) Rock In America" by Night Ranger yet. I would have to pick "I Love Rock N' Roll" by Joan jett, also, if only for the fact that there aren't many anthems sung by females.

Sarg, I always thought a rock anthem was a song that was tested by time and loved by new and older fans alike. One of those songs that everyone knows the words to, whether they want to or not. Not that you didn't pick great songs, because you did, that is just the definition I always gave it myself. Anyone have the 'technical' definition of an anthem for us?

You'd like to think so, wouldn't you?

How about "Rock You Like A Hurricane" by the Scorpions?

Gosh, there are soo many rock songs with an anthemic quality out there, from AC/DCs "Highway To Hell" to ZZ Tops "Gimme All Your Lovin' ". Even me had to admit it...great stuff.

I never considered KISS to be glam, they were more leather and studs than glam in the beginning anyway.

Wave gave the Webster's definition of anthem perfectly. In the case of rock & roll, an anthem is a song that, in the loosest sense, rallies kids behind it.

Perfect examples, even thought they're not 80's, are

"Won't Get Fooled Again" by the Who
"Rock & Roll All Nite" by KISS
"Shout It Out Loud" also by KISS
"Long Live Rock & Roll" by Rainbow
"Rock & Roll" by Led Zeppelin
    "Highway Star" by Deep Purple

    and from the 80's

"We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister
"You Can't Stop Rock & Roll" also by Twisted
    "Metal Health" by Quiet Riot
"Stand Up And Shout" by Dio
"You've Got Another Thing Comin'" by Judas Priest

Songs like "I Love Rock & Roll" are great, and have anthemy qualities, but it's a song essentially about trying to get laid. So is "Rock You Like A Hurricane". In that sense, I wouldn't consider them "anthems" in the strictest sense, as they didn't cause any kind of movement.

Hope that clears things up a little!

    Wink

Oh...okay Pagan, your definition is definetly better.

Guess that the German audience is not always listening to the lyrics. I think that the hymnic style makes certain rock songs an anthem here (Helloween was being 'accused' for that quite often ).

But - doesn´t laying someone down also including a certain kind of movement?
