"Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale" of a time when television shows began with awesome TV Theme Songs. "Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name" and sometimes you want to go back to when TV Theme songs were special. "Here's a story... of a lovely" time when TV Theme Songs served to identify, distinguish and set the stage for the television program that followed. "You take the good, take the bad, take them both and there you have" what unfortunately has become a lost artform. "Believe it or not", sadly it seems no effort or pride is taken in the TV Theme Song ever since Seinfeld proved a short synth-bass riff could be used instead. “Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated!” This regular feature may not "make all our dreams come true", but it will remember some of the best TV Theme Songs from years past (with a focus on the '80s decade). "Come aboard, we're expecting you."
This time we will cover the theme song for Perfect Strangers titled "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now". "Sometimes the world looks perfect, nothing to rearrange. Sometimes you get a feeling like you need some kind of change." Perfect Strangers debuted in March of 1986 and ran eight seasons and 150 episodes mostly as part of ABC's "TGIF" Friday-night line-up. This sitcom following the exploits of cousins Balki Bartokomous and Larry Appleton always cracked me up. It also happens to have an awesome theme song.
"Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" was written by Jesse Frederick and Bennett Salvay, who would also compose the themes for other Miller-Boyett series including Full House, Step by Step and Family Matters. Producers chose singer/composer David Pomeranz to sing the theme song. I was not familiar with Pomeranz previous to hearing him sing this song, but I feel his voice was a perfect match for another one of my favorite TV Theme Songs of the entire decade. Here are the opening credits from season 1 of Perfect Strangers featuring “Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now” performed by David Pomeranz…
There were some slight variations to length and arrangement made over the course of the show's run. I believe they really created something special with this one and that "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" is relatively underrated as far as TV Theme Songs go. If you disagree, I have one phrase to say to you... "Don't be ridiculous!" If you do agree, let's just do the Dance of Joy. "Standing tall, on the wings of my dream."
Hope you enjoyed tuning in for another "episode" of TV Theme Songs!
